Sons,
Our Past Detachment Commander for the Department of Texas - Mr. Don Daft - recently visited Washington with delegations from all over the country to press the "Debt Commission" Super-Committee on budget issues regarding our nation's veteran's, their families and the current service members who are so honorably serving our nation.
This issue is probably one of the biggest issues that both our country and our organization should be focused on for the near future. The decisions made by this committee will change our spending habits and change government programs both for the good and the bad. According to what the Generals of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have told congress; this issue is not just a foreign or domestic issue but also one of great national security concern. Having been informed of the magnitude of this issue from both military brass and congressional staffers is the reason why the legion and the entire legion family will be pressing both Congressman Hensarling and the rest of the super-committee on this vital issue as Commander Daft did this past week.
Today, YOUR state legislative committee called Congressman Hensarling and other members of the super-committee to request that they listen to both the legion and Commander Daft on our position that this is a grave issue that if not taken seriously could harm our country's security concerns. The Detachment Legislative Committee also would like to encourage all members, squadrons, districts and divisions to call their member of congress on this important issue!
Chairman Betancourt released the following statement today after the calls:
"Today, the Sons of the American Legion Detachment of Texas called upon the members of Congress from Texas and the Super-Committee in Congress to pay attention to the cuts and budgetary concerns of the United States Military and of our nations veterans. The members of congress told the Detachment of Texas that they will work hard to make sure that our concerns are heard and that they will do everything in their power to protect the military and veterans of Texas and the United States."

veterans everyday,
