Santiago J. Betancourt
State Legislative Committee
Chairman
Austin, Texas - Today, Chairman of the State Legislative Committee;
Santiago Betancourt released the following statement in regards to the
incident that had happened at the Houston National Cemetery involving
volunteers helping with veteran's funerals at the site invoking 'God
Bless You'.
"As an American, and as a Son of the American Legion, I am troubled by
the incident at the Houston National Cemetery where volunteers were
informed that they could not say "God Bless You" to families of our men
and woman who payed the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. This type
of censorship goes against all that our men and woman fought for and we
ask that the Veteran's Affairs Department in Washington, D.C. allow the
volunteers to pay their respects to the families in this manner if they
chose too."
The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization
within The American Legion. The S.A.L. is made up of men of all ages
whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and
became eligible for membership in The American Legion. Together,
members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary and the
Sons of The American Legion make up what is known as The American
Legion Family.
